Brexit Party MEP Ann Widdecombe has been criticised after comparing Brexit to slaves rising up “against their owners” in a fiery address to the European Parliament.
The former Conservative MP, who was elected as a Member of European Parliament for the Brexit Party when it claimed victory in May’s European elections, used her maiden speech in Strasbourg to compare Brexit to a colonised country rising up against occupying forces.
The 71-year-old joined Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party ahead of May’s EU elections, in which she was subsequently elected an MEP for the South West.
Her comments in the European Parliament were criticised on Thursday.
