Eleven South Africans in the 148th Open Championship field

The 148th Open Championship gets under way at Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland on Thursday.

This year there will be 11 South Africans in the field. The last time a South African lifted the famed Claret Jug was in 2012 when Ernie Els won by single stroke at Royal Lytham & St Annes.

Ernie is joined by Louis Oosthuizen, Justin Harding,  Branden Grace, Erik van Rooyen, Dylan Frittelli who qualified this past weekend by winning the John Deere Classic, Shaun Norris, Christiaan Bezuidenhout who the Andalucía Masters, Richard Sterne, Brandon Stone and Zander Lombard who won the 2018/19 Sunshine Tour Order of Merit
