Man sentenced for public violence and assaulting police

Thirty-year-old Lwandiso Fungwana has been sentenced to five-year imprisonment by the Caledon Magistrates court after he was found guilty on charges of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm, public violence and malicious damage to property.

Fungwana was arrested after a protest by residents of the New France informal settlement near Botriver.

The protesters barricaded the N2 highway.

Western Cape Hawks spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Philani Nkwalase says the damage caused by the protesters was worth more than a million rand.
