Scholtz & Basson advance at Futures

South African Davis Cup player Nik Scholtz reached the second round of the Digicall Futures 3 tennis tournament at Maties Tennis Club on Wednesday. This is the last of the three Digicall Futures tournaments played at the Stellenbosch University.
Scholtz is seeded second for the tournament. He beat qualifier Patrick Foley from England 6-4, 6-2 in just over an hour on court.
The other South African man to advance on the day was Lance-Pierre Du Toit, who comfortably beat Yan Sabanin of Russia, 6-4 6-2.
Last week’s finalist Connor Farren from America also made the next round by winning his match against lucky looser Joseph Van Meter also from America 6-4, 6-2.
The Digicall Futures 2 champion Toby Martin from England made easy work of his match against Austrian David Pichler (seeded 7th). He won 6-4, 6-2.
In the women’s draw, double champion Ekaterina Makarova from Russia needed just over an hour to beat South African Maretha Burger 6-3, 6-2. She is joined in the next round by her countrywoman and finalist from the first week Anastasia Shaulskaya (3) who also got the better of a South African beating Sari Stegmann 6-2, 6-2. Makarova is seeded first for this tournament.
Second seeded Katharina Hering (GER) and seventh seed Eva Vedder (NED) will also be in action in the next round along with last week’s finalist Alice Gillan (GBR, 8).
Megan Basson was the only South African woman to win on day two when she eliminated Brit Annuciate De-Souza 7-5, 6-1.
